N2O

For patients who may feel anxious about dental procedures, we offer Nitrous Oxide—commonly known as laughing gas or N2O—as a safe and effective sedation option. This mild sedative is a colorless, odorless gas that, when inhaled, helps you relax during treatment while remaining awake and responsive. It’s a great option for both children and adults.

How it works:

  • Nitrous oxide acts on the central nervous system to induce a state of relaxation.
  • It is inhaled through a mask that is placed over the nose.
  • The effects are typically felt within minutes.
  • Nitrous oxide can be adjusted throughout the procedure to ensure optimal comfort.
  • Nitrous oxide is then "flushed out" of your system by breathing in 100% oxygen at the end of your appointment.

Benefits:

  • Reduces anxiety or fear related to dental procedures, and helps patients relax
  • Rapid onset and recovery: effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed.
  • Safe and effective when administered by a trained professional.
  • Does not typically cause lasting side effects.

Potential Side Effects:

  • Mild and temporary side effects may include dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, or headache.
  • In very rare cases, more severe side effects like allergic reactions (fever, chills, hives, wheezing, difficulty breathing) may occur.

Note: If you experience any severe or concerning reactions during, or after receiving nitrous oxide, please let Dr. Halls know. It is import to discuss medical history or concerns with Dr. Halls before being placed on Nitrous Oxide to ensure this option is suitable for you.
